Height, Walker honored for their King-like spirit

By Ashley Johnson

For 30 years, the Spirit of King Award has been bestowed posthumously upon individuals from the region who, like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., were dedicated and worked diligently for the betterment of people. Through their works, they ensured that opportunities were given to all and left behind a legacy that continues to live on many years after their deaths.

On Jan. 14, at a special ceremony held at the Kingsley Association, in East Liberty, and sponsored by Port Authority of Allegheny County, the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Kingsley Association and the New Pittsburgh Courier, two more individuals were honored and added to a list of more than 40 trailblazing champions—Dorothy I. Height and Dr. Curtis L. Walker.

“For 30 years now, we’ve come together as a community to honor the lives dedicated to the service of others. Lives that advanced the cause of equity in our city, our region, our state and our nation. Lives that embody the life, the spirit of Martin Luther King,” said Ellen McLean, CEO of Port Authority. “I’m proud to join with the Kingsley Association, the New Pittsburgh Courier and the Pittsburgh Pirates to recognize two lives lived well, Dorothy Height and Dr. Curtis Walker.”
